26 June, 2008 Second Life & Libraries, TELSIG

Today I collaborated (virtually and in person) with three other Second Life educators to present a session on Libraries and Second Life at the TELSIG National Seminar which is being held in Palmerston North today and tomorrow.

I was incredibly nervous, and we were all crossing our fingers and toes that there wouldn’t be technology hitches – but all in all – even though there was the odd hiccup, I think it went pretty well! Everyone I spoke to afterwards had such nice things to say. (more…)

Temporary new look

I’ve just got my marks back from university for my final assignment in the Web and Intranet Content Management paper I took last trimester. This assignment gave me the opportunity to write a report evaluating our website at the Victoria library.

My report was significantly influenced by Jesse James Garrett’s book The Elements of User Experience. Garrett describes a five plane methodology to guide the development of websites and other interactive online applications. For my assessment of the library website I “reverse-engineered” Garrett’s strategy – using it as a guide to consider the success with which the library website met criteria drawn from four out of the five planes he describes. 29 May, 2007 proposal completed

I (finally) submitted my proposal for my 580 Research project a couple of weeks ago. Part of the most daunting bit of my study towards the Masters of Library and Information Studies programme at Victoria University, my project is titled “Virtual World Libraries: Challenges and Strategies”. In brief, the research explores three questions:

  1. What challenges faced by traditional online library services/interfaces are able to be overcome by Virtual World Library environments?
  2. What new challenges (or old ones) face the development of Libraries in Virtual Worlds?
  3. How might these challenges be overcome? Can the design strategies used in Massively Multiplayer Online Games be a useful guide?

When talking about “Virtual World Libraries”, I am referring to initiatives such as the Info Island Libraries now being run in Second Life, spearheaded by the Alliance Library System. I’m planning that my research will involve interviews with a few the users of these libraries, to learn about their experiences of the online library environment. Here’s an excerpt (more…)
